International Institute of Welding (IIW) with a 70-year history and 59 member countries will hold the 70th Annual Assembly and International Conference in Shanghai. Besides Annual Assembly and International Conference, IIW•CWS•Arc Cup 2017 International Welding Competition (hereinafter referred to as 2017 International Welding Competition), another important event of IIW, will be conducted grandly. IIW Intermediate Meeting was held in Paris, France from 9th to 13th January, 2017. Dr. Liu Zhenying, Chairman of Beijing ARC Xinxing Science & Technology Co., Ltd., Secretary-General of Organizing Committee of Arc Cup International Welding Competition and the Chairman of China Section of BRICS Business Council Skills Development Working Group (SDWG), was invited to attend this meeting. During the meeting, Dr. Liu Zhenying discussed the major arrangements of 2017 International Welding Competitionwith responsible personnel of competition hosts (IIW and Chinese Welding Society CWS), which provides a base for the success host of 2017 International Welding Competition, creates conditions for deep matching between the Competition and Assembly and offers a direction for the Competition development.

As an international highest level academic community in welding, IIW aims to organize exchange activities of welding technology for various countries so as to push forward the development of welding technology. Dr. Liu Zhenying presented wonderful video of 2016 (4th) Beijing “Arc Cup” International Welding Competition and introduced the details of 2017 International Welding Competition and Competition preparation during the IIW WGRA Meeting, IIW IAB Meeting, IIW IAB AAA Meeting and IIW COMMISSION XIV Meeting. And, Professor Wu Yixiong, Vice Chairman of CWS and Executive of IIW, introduced the CWS preparation work for 2017 International Welding Competition during the meeting.

Dr. Liu stressed that this competition was consisted of three parts: Welding Theory Competition, Robot Welding Competition and Welding Skills Competition. Welding Theory Competition refers to New Welding Technology, Welding Equipment, Welding Material, Welding Process and Their Application Competition for college undergraduate, higher vocational and secondary vocational students (including postgraduates), welding engineering technicians, welding workers and management staff. And Welding Theory Competition will be held in the venue of IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference (Shanghai International Convention Center). It acceptsthe way of participants submitting papers, experts assessment and on-site defense. Participants should submit papers related to New Welding Technique, New Equipment, New Material and New Technology and presentation PPT or submit drawings + project photos related to New Welding Technique, New Equipment, New Material and New Technology and presentation PPT. Welding Theory Competition is a newly added project to encourage young welding professionals to study welding theory actively with innovation and aggressiveness.

In addition, innovation is made on robot welding projects of 2017 International Welding Competition because of adding a new competition project (Welding Robots Demonstration Competition). The Welding Robots Demonstration Competition is for welding robot manufacturers and system integration manufacturers. Each participation team shall provide 1 minute welding robots performance video before this competition and re-show the whole welding process in the video within the designated time to prove the authenticity and validity of the video during the competition. Traditional Welding Robots Programming and Operation Competition will be judged by domestic and foreign judges in accordance with the established international standards and regulations to ensure the justice in competition and keep the international standard. Moreover, Robot Welding Competition (Welding Robots Demonstration Competition and Welding Robots Programming and Operation Competition) will be conducted in the Essen Show Venue.

Welding Skills Competition, a traditional competition project of 2017 International Welding Competition, consists of competitions of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (111/SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (135/GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (141/GTAW), Oxygen Fuel Gas Welding, Finished-product Welding (SMAW/GTAW/GMAW/FCAW) and Welding Competition for Non-regulated Projects (Demonstration Competition included). Welding Skills Competition will be conducted in a workshop in Shanghai during IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference. Honor certificates of 2017 International Welding Competition will be co-issued by IIW, CWS and Organizing Committee of Arc Cup International Welding Competition. The participants of State-owned Enterprises with Outstanding Prizes have the chance to be entitled “China’s Central Enterprises Technical Expert” and “China’s Enterprises Young Technical Expert” by SASAC after submitting relevant information.

After the Intermediate Meeting in Paris, Dr. Liu Zhenying was invited to visit the headquarters of DVS GSI SLV (Duisburg, Germany) and discussed training and certification for international welders and technical cooperation further with newly-appointed CEO and Executive Director of GSI SLV, who plan to examine the welding training center of ARC Company in China in early March or in late May.
