Background of the Establishment of the Asian Welding Federation

The establishment of the Asian Welding Federation (AWF) was driven by a shared vision among its members to strengthen and harmonize welding technology development across Asia.

Common Views of AWF Members at the Foundation

The founding members shared several common perspectives, including:

  • Rapid increase in steel consumption across Asia.
  • The impact of globalization, Free Trade Agreements (FTA), and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) agreements.
  • The expansion of European countries into Asian markets.
  • The growing need to reduce the technological gap in welding among Asian countries.
  • The importance of promoting welding technology transfer and development within the region.

Foundation of AWF

  • July 2004 – Preparatory meeting for the foundation of AWF held in Osaka, Japan.
  • October 2004 – Official inaugural meeting of AWF held in Manila, Philippines.

Years Of Journey

Overview

The Asian Welding Federation (AWF) was officially formed in Osaka, Japan, on July 16, 2004.
The federation was established with the aim of improving the welding communities in Asia, focusing on both economic and technological growth.

Currently, 13 Asian countries are members of AWF, and the federation holds three to four meetings each year.


Purpose and Mission

The AWF is a non-profit organization formed by various welding societies, institutes, and associations across Asia. Its primary mission is to improve and promote welding technology through the exchange of scientific information and technical knowledge, contributing to the economic and technological progress of the region.

The federation seeks to:

  • Promote the technical advancement of the science, art, and practice of welding in all its forms.

  • Foster the development of allied and complementary technologies related to welding.

  • Encourage and conduct research and experimentation in welding technology.

  • Disseminate and promote knowledge of all welding systems and their industrial applications.

  • Support improvements in welding methods, applications, and standards for industrial and commercial purposes.

Main Objectives

The key objectives of the AWF are as follows:

  • Standardization of welding skills and qualifications across member countries.

  • Promotion of scientific and technical exchange in welding knowledge and skills.

  • Development of a formal framework to guide AWF members toward a common welding standard.

  • Definition of common guidelines for education, training, qualification, and certification of welding personnel and related technologies.

  • Enhancement of welding qualifications and efficiency across Asia.

To achieve these objectives, the AWF operates through various working units, sub-committees, and task groups, either independently or in cooperation with other organizations that share similar goals.


Membership

Since its establishment in 2004, AWF’s membership has continued to grow.
Current member countries include:
China, Indonesia, Iran, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
